Most specialty Kenya coffee is grown by small scale farmers and co-operatives, washed and sun dried, and then consolidated at the mills. Before any coffee is exported it has to undergo testing by the Coffee Board of Kenya.
We purchase our Kenyan AA coffee through these mills at the Nairobi auctions. Kenyan coffee is sold by lots at auctions; specialty Kenyan coffee is graded AA or AB, with AA being the highest grade. We have found that the growing regions in Central Kenya produce the best Kenya lots. The coffee is either the Typica or the SL-28 variety of coffee trees and is grown at 3,500 feet or higher.
